Radiators Not Heating

When some radiators heat and others don't, the boiler is usually fine and the trouble is in a zone or a loop, so call and say which rooms went cold.

What a pro does

The pattern of what's cold tells most of the story. An entire zone going dark points at a zone valve, a circulator, or the end switch that's supposed to tell the boiler to fire for that loop, and a tech can check each of those in a few minutes with a meter at the panel. A single cold radiator in an otherwise warm zone is a different problem, usually air trapped at that emitter or a valve that has seized. Trickling water inside a cool radiator is the classic sound of an air pocket. Retrofit loops added for a later addition are worth their own look, since they're often tied in without proper balancing.

Frequently asked questions

It's a small motorized valve that opens a loop when that zone calls for heat. The motor or the end switch inside it is what typically gives out, not the valve body.
A loop added later often shares a circulator that wasn't sized for the extra length, and without balancing the new run gets whatever flow is left over.
Sometimes a system with a good air separator clears itself, but plenty of loops hold a pocket indefinitely until it's purged deliberately.
Not exactly the same, since the ones nearest the boiler usually run a bit hotter, but a radiator that stays at room temperature is telling you something.
